Personality[]
Lafayette was a short order cook for Merlotte's Bar and Grill.
He was known to be cheerful, mischievous, clever, and a good cook. He had a special dish that became popular amongst the regulars of Merlotte's, known as Burgers Lafayette. Sookie calls him a "make-up-and-long-fingernails gay" and says that she's always liked him because he "conducted what had to be a tough life with verve and grace." He also had a morbid sense of humor.
Lafayette is murdered by members of a secret Bon Temps sex club in the second book, Living Dead in Dallas. His body is discovered by Sookie, in the back seat of Andy Bellefleur's car, as she arrives for work one morning.
Television Version[]
In the True Blood TV Series, Lafayette's character is greatly expanded. In the show he was the nephew of Lettie Mae Daniels, and Tara Thornton's cousin (with whom she was close). Although partaking in several illegal activities, he's a good person at heart, and is careful not to harm his customers with the drugs he deals. He takes care of his loved ones, no matter what strange problems they may have. He is suspicious and has gone through a lot in his life.
Nelsan Ellis' portrayal of Lafayette was so engaging that they decided to keep him as a major character throughout the series, rather than having him die as in the books.
